Sophie

It had been three fantastic weeks since Nick and I became roommates. He chose the room with the biggest bed, which was just a double, but much better for sharing than mine. And, we’d shared it every single night since he moved in.

We’d developed a lovely rhythm both inside and outside the bedroom, sharing the cooking and cleaning up. We were trying to keep cool at the firehall since neither of us wanted the other members to know how embedded in the community Nick had become. It made for some uncomfortable practices and emergency calls with innuendo over the radio—Sophie, come pull hose with me! And Sophie, set up a forward lay for me!—that sometimes made me laugh and always made me horny for him.

I knew Nick was good people because he arranged a deal with a buddy of his to provide Max with high-quality raw dog food. He told me not to worry about how much it cost since his friend owed him a favor and this was how he was paying him back. I saw the invoices and it was true—there was no charge for the box of meat that was being delivered on Thursdays.

Just when I’d started to feel like my life was settling into something I could see as my future, I got a registered letter from my miserly siblings’ lawyer. In a nutshell, it was a ruling that said since I wasn’t named in the will, Clause 3.4 did not apply to me. Basically, I was now trespassing or illegally squatting since my employer no longer needed me to do my job.

The letter went on to say that the new owners of the home had all agreed that it would be in the best interest of the estate to a) put the house on the market as soon as possible, and b) have it vacant when it was being shown. They’d been generous enough to give me thirty days to find a new home.

I called Linda, the postmistress who knew about all the comings and goings of people in town including which houses had rooms to rent. She confirmed what I expected: Max, Nick and I were screwed.

I dropped the letter on the kitchen counter and pulled Dylan’s contact up on my phone. I texted him,

I’ll do the DNA test. What’s the worst that can happen?

I went online and ordered the test, paying for expedited shipping. I had no idea how this would help me not have to move, but I did have a strong suspicion that Dylan would be able to provide me with his pro bono services based on a memory that I’d fought to ignore or forget for two full decades.

When I thought my day couldn’t get any worse, my phone rang. A ringing phone was never good news in my world since friends would text, not call. I’d have ignored it but the caller ID was the bank where Papa had his account. I took a steadying breath and smiled when I answered.
